30 minutes a day.

Reading for something other than work is often my greatest challenge with regards to my daily growth plan. It is too easy to be distracted. I can workout twice a day, but, somehow, picking up a book is difficult.

It should not be a difficult habit. I set my bar rather low—just 30 minutes a day. Nevertheless, I let myself be distracted by television, social media, e-mail, and game apps on my phone. No excuses, just a lack of discipline.

I recently read Stephen King’s book, On Writing. Ironically, it gave me great inspiration to read. King, while a prolific writer, is also an avid reader. He suggests carrying a book with one at all times. This permits one to read a few pages while in line at a store, in a waiting room, etc. Great advice. I am working on following it. I have Kindle on my phone. I don’t need to carry a paperback book—or spend idle time playing a game.

Most importantly, I need to block out a half-hour a day to read. There is plenty of time. I am just not using my time wisely (opportunity costs). I trust many of my readers are in this same boat. (Reading this post may be a way of filling “idle” time. Don’t stop reading this blog, but be effective with your time. Hopefully, visiting this page is just a scheduled activity in your growth plan.)

Reading is important. It is essential to one’s Intellectual well-centered fitness. Like exercising they physiological systems, so should we be exercising our mind.

Thirty minutes a day is not too difficult. Commit to reading regularly—daily. Create the habit.

Be your best today; be better tomorrow.

Carpe momento!
